The Redding Police Chief has announced that he will not be retiring at the end of the year.

In a letter sent to City Manager Kurt Starman dated Monday, Chief Peter Hansen said the time is not right for him to leave. So he has decided to withdraw his notice of intent to retire.

Chief Hansen said that many people have approached him in the past few weeks to express their support and guidance for public safety and the Redding Police Department. He conveyed his appreciation for their concern and support.

The Chief says the upcoming year may be one of the most difficult in the history of the department. With 14 more officer positions slated to be cut by the end of the year, the Chief says, “Service reductions will be necessary to maintain reasonable response times for emergencies.”

Peter Hansen originally sent in his intent to retire on May 13th. It was scheduled to go into effect on December 3, 2010.
