Daytime Home Burglaries On The Rise In Redding
POSTED: 2:02 pm PDT September 2, 2010UPDATED: 6:24 pm PDT September 2, 2010REDDING, Calif. -- Break-ins could be a thing of the past in Redding. That's because criminals these days are simply walking into homes, and in broad daylight. Redding police say daytime home burglaries increased nearly 33 percent from 2009. Scott Hyatt works in the burglary division with the Redding Police Department, he says criminals will, "go to a residential area, knock on a door, ring a doorbell, if there's no answer and somebody's at work they'll look for an easy entrance into the residence."
Hyatt says common ways criminals are getting into homes are partially open garage doors, and rear entrances. Hyatt says during the summer months people often leave windows cracked as well, and often go to work everyday with a false sense of security. "I think we all get complacent in our neighborhoods and we wanna feel safe...but it's just a crime of opportunity."
While it seems like a no-brainer, locking all doors and windows is the best way to keep criminals out of your home. "They're finding an easy opportunity to get into a house, and when they find it they'll take that opportunity." Hyatt says, "if the house is locked up, and it's going to be a little more effort, then they generally won't take that effort." Hyatt also says keep valuables out of plain site, both in your home and in your car.
Hyatt also mentioned that internet sites like Facebook and Twitter, where people frequently post where they are, can also be tools for criminals to see nobody's home. "Any social networking site is open to anyone to look at, and I wouldn't be broadcasting the information that you're going to be out of town."
