Paradise Teachers Reach Deal With District

Savings of $680,000 are expected for Paradise Unified School District thanks to a new collective bargaining agreement.

The Board of Trustees approved the deal 4-0, with trustee Donna Nichols absent, at a special meeting on Friday.

The agreement allows the district to reopen libraries at elementary and intermediate schools as well averting the closure of Cedarwood Elementary School.

The savings come from the elimination of four days from the school year and having teachers take over yard duty assignments.

But trustee Tim Titus says the district may have to ask for more concessions if the state continues to cut funding.

“We’re struggling because every time Sacramento does something it’s smoke and mirrors. They give it in one place and take it away in another. It’s important for us as an organization to work side by side for the collective good. It’s all about the kids,” said Titus.

The agreement will expire at the end of the school year.

Negotiations for next year will begin later this month.
