Migrant Camp Raising Concerns In Corning
POSTED: 6:52 pm PDT September 9, 2010UPDATED: 11:11 am PDT September 10, 2010CORNING, Calif. -- Some residents in Corning are upset overt plans for a migrant worker camp that would house 140 laborers. The camp would be owned by olive giant Angelo Ferro, and would only be open for 60 days during harvest season. Lerose Lane lives near the Ferro orchard, and she says the camp will bring noise, and traffic through her normally quiet neighborhood. "I do look at the migrant camp as a decrease in my quality of life."
Lane has lived in her Corning home for five years, and she says the camp will bring people into the area who could bring trouble with them. "We know nothing about their history, where they're from, they could be coming up from Fresno, or up from Mexico...they could come from anywhere."
Tehama County Planning Director George Robson disagrees. He says, after numerous studies and comparison to similar camps in the area, he's concluded there will not be a significant safety, or environmental impact on Corning residents. Robson says people seem to be more upset about something else, "it boils down to the fabric or the style, the look of the community."
The County will meet again September 16th to discuss moving forward with the project.
