Updated: All Three Fires In Trinity County Contained

Fire Officials report that the two fires in Junction City and one in Weaverville are now fully contained.

Monday afternoon there was one fire burning on Oregon Mountain near Weaverville, fire officials say it was about a tenth of an acre and quickly contained.

People living in the areas of Rifle Range Road and Slattery Pond were under voluntary evacuation. No one decided to leave the evacuation zone.

Two other fires were reportedly burning in the Canyon Creek, no structures were being threatened. The fire west of Canyon Creek Road was about a tenth of an acre and quickly contained. The fire east of Canyon Creek quickly spread to 30 acres by the afternoon. Officials say high winds and the dry ground fueled the fire. Plus, since it was on such a steep slope, it was difficult for crews to get to on the ground.

The fires were being fought on the ground and from the air. Officials told KRCR News Channel 7 that several air tankers and helicopters assisted in the effort.

The Trinity County Sheriff's Office tells us that at least one of the fires was sparked by a power company installing new power lines in the area. Crews were energizing the lines when they started arcing, creating sparks which led to the fire. Three crew members were injured. One was airlifted to a nearby hospital; the other two were taken via ambulance to be treated.

Over 200 personnel were on scene to assist in the Canyon Incident, including: Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, US Forest Service, Junction City Fire Protection District, Weaverville Fire Protection District, Salyer Fire Protection District and Hawkins Bar Fire Protection District.

First Alert Meteorologist Chita Johnson told us, as of 3:30 p.m., Junction City was at 94 degrees with 19 percent relative humidity. Anything below 20 percent humidity is considered pretty dry and can make for tough firefighting conditions.

Fire officials expect to have crews out on the Canyon Incident overnight and for the next few days.
