The gem of Trinity County is riding high in a nationwide contest for the "Coolest Small Towns 2012".

Voters from the Northstate, and beyond apparently, have pushed Weaverville into the number one spot over two East Coast towns in an online contest sponsored by Budget Travel.

The town quickly climbed to the top. It was in 2nd place on Monday and 3rd place over the weekend.

The travel magazine and website narrowed the search down to 10 standout communities across the country, after readers nominated a record 647 towns for the contest this year.

As of 11 am Tuesday morning, Weaverville had 20.8% of the votes, followed by Hammondsport, NY with 20.5% and Damascus, Virginia with 13.1%.

If you'd like to vote, you can cast your ballot at the COOLEST SMALL TOWN IN AMERICA 2012 CONTEST.

You can vote once a day through January 31, 2012.
