OROVILLE, Calif. - They are honoring fallen officers at Butte College with a memorial that needs some serious upgrade.
While many law enforcement academy classes raise funds for equipment or other items, things are different this time around. A standard practice for every academy class is to fund-raise for a class project to honor their time there. The Butte College Law Enforcement Academy Class 133 is remembering those who came before them.
They saw a need for special recognition and are working toward an upgraded memorial.
"15 recruits that have gone through this law enforcement academy have been killed in the line of duty," said academy co-coordinator John Carrillo.
Class members said the current one on campus is weathered. It sits next to the flag pole on a small brick walkway near the Allied Health/Public Service Building of the Butte College Main Campus. An aluminum plaque with 15 names is attached to a fake, hollow boulder.
It goes unnoticed by many who walk by, but not by these classmates.
"The recruits coming through here recognize you're getting into a serious career field and these are the people that have gone before you," said recruit Matthew Sandquist.
The recruits have put in the elbow grease but are looking for additional support.
"Part of what we do as a class is we clean the monument to show our respect," said recruit Jessica Raggio. "This class has just realized that the monument is faded and dull and it needs to be replaced."
They received a donation of professional pictures of the fallen officers, and will be attaching them to the new memorial. They are doing a lot of fundraising themselves, too.
"A lot of it has been raised from within our own class - which is very hard to do when we're trying to do a project of this size," Raggio said.
"It does need to be improved. So I'm really thankful that this class has taken on it as a project."
The academy class is continuing to ask for help. They will be holding a fundraiser at Woodstock's Pizza in Chico Tuesday night.
