Appeals Court: Drivers can check maps while driving

RED BLUFF, Calif. - Drivers can now check their maps on their phones while driving. The state appeals court has reversed the conviction of a Fresno driver who got a ticket in January of 2012 for looking at a map on his iphone.

The driver challenged the $165 fine. The new ruling means you can legally use your phone to get you to your destination.

But Tehama County CHP said you still need to follow the road rules.

"You might be using your map, you still have to maintain your vehicle within its lane, obey all speed limits," said Tehama County CHP Officer Matthew Thompson. "You still have to be paying attention to what's going on around you, there's still lots of other reasons to contact you for being distracted even if you aren't texting or talking."

Tehama County CHP said they will be keeping a close eye on drivers.

CHP can also ask to see your phone or even obtain phone records to prove irresponsible driving.
