Bee causes SR 273 big rig accident, southbound lanes closed

ANDERSON, Calif. - Highway 273 near Latona Road was closed down Wednesday morning after a semi truck left the roadway and struck a power pole.

According to a CHP officer on the scene the Oak Harbor Freight truck was traveling southbound on Highway 273 when a bee flew into the driver's mouth through an open window. The driver said he started to lose consciousness and drifted off the road.

As the vehicle left the roadway it struck two roadside sheds, one had people inside it. CHP said that no one inside the structure was injured.

The truck continued until it hit a power pole. The accident knocked down the power lines leaving 1,780 PG&E customers without power. By noon, all but a handful of those customers had their power restored.  A PG&E representative said about six customers would be without service for several hours.

The southbound lanes of Highway 273 are expected to be closed much of the day.

The driver was uninjured in the crash.
