Butte County Rescuers Search For Missing Hiker on Snowy Pacific Crest Trail

PHILBROOK, Calif. - Butte County Search and Rescue units will resume their search Sunday for a hiker missing along the snowy Pacific Crest Trail.  They received a missing person report Friday night.

Robert Marmon, 27 of Chico, was scheduled to hike the Pacific Crest Trail for two days and meet a friend who was to pick him up in Belden on Highway 70 Friday morning.  But Marmon never made it to pick-up location.

Marmon left Inskip Wednesday afternoon.

Butte County Search and Rescue Public Information Officer Kevin Lucero said Marmon was carrying a backpack, two sleeping bags, food and water.  But he may not have had adequate protection from cold weather and several feet of snow.

Lucero said according to his friend, Marmon may have thought he would be finished with his hike before the worst of the storm hit.

The search was halted Saturday afternoon after Search and Rescue crews had difficulty navigating through more than five feet of snow using a snowcat in the Philbrook area.  Lucero said they plan to reorganize Sunday morning, and head out on snowmobiles.

Robert Marmon is 27 years old, 6'2", 160 lbs, with brown hair & hazel eyes.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Butte County Sheriff's Office.
