Car crash kills two people in Shasta County

REDDING, Calif. - A deadly crash claims two lives when the driver was forced to swerve off the roadway to avoid pigs.

It happened at 6:30 p.m. Monday night on Highway 36, just west of Bowman Road in Cottonwood.

California Highway Patrol says a 1999 Ford F-350 hit three large pigs in the road while driving west on Highway 36.

The driver veered to the left, driving off the road's edge and into an oak tree.

CHP says the truck spun into the tree, smashing its right side and crushing the roof.

The jaws of life were used to try and pull the driver and passenger out, but at 7:51 p.m., both were declared dead.

Their identities have not yet been released.
