Chico named Tree City USA for 30th consecutive year

CHICO, Calif. - The Arbor Day Foundation has certified Chico with the Tree City USA designation for the 30th straight year.

Cities must achieve four core standards to earn the certification. Those include maintaining a tree board or department, having a city tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day.

Two Arbor Day events are scheduled for Friday.

Ten trees will be planted on El Dorado St. near E. 8th St. to replace trees that were killed by disease.

Another event will be held at Bidwell Mansion starting at 2:00 p.m. State Park staff will give an overview of historic trees on the Mansion grounds. That will be followed by tree plantings in three locations and cleanup along Big Chico Creek.
