DA issues warning about penalties for fireworks

OROVILLE, Calif. - Butte County's District Attorney is warning people about the price of having illegal fireworks in the county.

Any possession of fireworks, even safe and sane fireworks, in the unincorporated parts of Butte County is illegal.

In a news release D.A. Mike Ramsey reminds residents only the cities of Oroville and Gridley allow the sale of the fireworks in Butte County.  But taking them out of those cities is illegal as well.

"Do not buy fireworks within the city and believe that just because they are designated as "safe and sane" that they can be taken out of the city. No such fireworks can leave the city limits," Ramsey said.

Fines can be more than $1,000 if you possess fireworks outside those two cities.  Another consequence could be six months in jail.

Any fire either intentionally or negligently set by fireworks can be prosecuted as a felony.
