DA: Man shot by Oroville officers was suicidal

OROVILLE, Calif. - Three officers opened fire on a man at an Oroville motel Monday afternoon.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the individual shot to death at the Sunset Inn was a 53-year-old man who had come to Oroville from out of the area with a work crew.

Ramsey said the Oroville Police Department received a report of a suicidal subject around 4:00 p.m. When officers arrived, the man was allegedly locked inside his motel room.

Officers spoke with the man on the phone for about an hour, according to Ramsey. He said the man was reportedly going to kill himself with a knife.

Three officers broke down the door and the man allegedly came out of the room with the weapon. He was shot by the officers, according to Ramsey.

Ramsey said the protocol team will be at the scene investigating through the night. He said the investigating team will look into whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
