WILLOW CREEK, Calif. - A CHP officer shot and killed a driver after a violent confrontation early Thursday in Humboldt County.
According to a CHP news release, the officer shot the suspect during a struggle after the officer responded to a traffic collision. The suspect's name was not immediately released. The officer was not identified.
The incident started when the officer responded to the single vehicle traffic collision at 1:35 a.m. Thursday on Highway 299 at Blue Jay Lane in the Willow Creek area.
The CHP said the driver attacked the officer with a deadly weapon.
The CHP did not immediately release information about what type of weapon the driver used.
The officer feared for his life and fired his gun at the suspect. The suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer suffered major injuries and was listed as in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
The county-wide shooting investigation team has been assigned to investigate this incident.
Investigators remained on the scene throughout the morning. Traffic is reduced to one lane and flaggers are posted to move drivers through the area.
PG&E said about 30 customers lost power after the initial collision, when the car hit a power pole.
