Democrat Fire grows to 180 acres, evacuations in effect

WEAVERVILLE, Calif. - According to Cheryl Buliavac, Public Information Officer with CAL FIRE, the Democrat Fire has burned 180 acres, and there isn't any containment.

An increase in winds continues to cause the fire to spot ahead of itself. The fire is burning in timber along Oregon Mountain. It was reported at 2:08 p.m.

The Trinity County Sheriff's Office has issued mandatory evacuations for the west side of Oregon Mountain down to Highway 299.

Steiner Flat Road in Douglas City is under voluntary evacuation.

The Democrat Fire is currently burning in the Democrat Gulch area off Oregon Street in Weaverville. There is a hard road closure on Oregon Street at Democrat Gulch to the top of Oregon Mountain.

The communication towers on Oregon Mountain are threatened, Buliavac said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and there isn't any containment. Buliavac said they have an extremely aggressive attack using both ground and air resources. She added retardant is holding at the ridge.

An evacuation center has been set up at First Baptist Church at 1261 S. Main Street in Weaverville.
