Deputies: Antique weather vane recovered in probation search

REDDING, Calif. - Deputies say a probation search turned up a stolen weather vane that once stood atop a hotel now submerged beneath Shasta Lake.

Richard Thomas, 47, was arrested Tuesday after allegedly leading deputies on a short pursuit on a motorcycle along Balls Ferry  Rd. in Anderson. Deputies said Thomas was seen throwing away ammunition during the chase.

After Thomas, who was on the Sheriff Work Release Program, was arrested, deputies conducted a probation search at his home on Willow St. in Cottonwood. They reportedly found an antique copper weather vane that was stolen in February. That weather vane was once on top of the Diamond Hotel in Kennett before the town was submerged when Shasta Dam was built.

Deputies said they also found 3.5 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside the home.

Thomas' girlfriend, Charlotte Wimmer, 44, who lives in the home, was also arrested.
