WILLOWS, Calif. - After five months of investigation, Glenn County deputies have made an arrest a stabbing that happened in November.
Donald Hagerty, 26, was arrested Thursday afternoon. Deputies said he admitted to entering the home of the victim in Willows and stabbing him several times. Investigators tracked down the Hagerty using DNA found at the crime scene.
The stabbing happened on November 26 at 10:54 a.m.. The victim, 55-year-old John Arano, was found at 414 North Colusa Street in Willows.
Arano was in his home lying on the floor just inside the entrance to his bedroom. Arano had suffered a large amount of blood loss from life threatening stab wounds. He was taken to Glenn Medical Center, and then airlifted to Enloe Hopsital in Chico.
Evidence from the crime scene was sent to the California Department of Justice State Crime Lab for analysis. The DNA profile was uploaded into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) where it was searched against profiles in the data base.
On April 11, Detective Kelly Knight of the Glenn County Sheriff's Office received a report from the State Crime Lab that a DNA match was identified between the case evidence submitted and Willows resident, Donald Hagerty.
Thursday morning, detectives interviewed Hagerty When confronted with the DNA evidence, they said Hagerty admitted to entering the victim's home on the morning of November 26, and stabbing him.
Hagerty was booked into the Glenn County Jail in Willows for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm which was likely to cause great bodily injury, and burglary. Hagerty was also on felony probation for a pervious conviction of possession of stolen property.
