COTTONWOOD, Calif. - Evergreen Elementary and middle schools held a Relay For Life Event Friday. Students got together to raise awareness and learn about different ways to prevent cancer.
They started their day by either running or walking a lap. Then they were divided into different groups to learn about nutrition, the importance of physical activity, tobacco prevention and sun safety.
And for many students the event hit very close to home. Griffin Payton lost his mother last year to cancer and said it's hard but raising awareness is important.
"I just hope that if it happens to somebody else that they stay strong stay positive through, while they don't lose hope," said Payton. "They know that they have all these people around them to keep them going, keep hope and everything."
About a thousand students participated.
