CHICO, Calif. - A new store opened to huge business Thursday morning in North Chico.
The Goodwill retail store opened in the former the Mervyns store next to the Tinseltown Theater in the shopping center near Cohasset and East Avenue.
The store was packed from the moment the store opened at 8 a.m. The store fills a large vacancy in Chico's commercial landscape. The former Mervyns building has stood vacant since the store closed in late 2008. The only exception has been limited occupancy by Halloween stores in the fall.
The store measures 25,000 square feet and will employee 69 people. Store officials said it will serve as an enclave where people with disabilities will receive on-the-job skills training, and will also house a Job Connection program which is a free job-search program open to the public.
Goodwill is a community based non-profit organization that provides job training and vocational access for the disabled, disadvantaged and disenfranchised. Goodwill Industries of Sacramento Valley and employs 1,500 people and more than 90% of total revenues are dedicated to job training.
The store's hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
There is a truck in the back parking lot that accepts donations.
