Homeless man shot by Redding police officer

REDDING, Calif. - A homeless man was shot by a Redding police officer on Wednesday evening along Park Marina Drive near the Cypress Street bridge.

According to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the case, a uniformed RPD officer encountered a homeless man just before 6:30 p.m., and the man began making statements that he had a knife and started moving toward the officer.

The officer fired his duty weapon at the male, hitting him in the upper torso. The man was taken into custody and transported to Mercy Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The officer was not hurt in the shooting. All roads closed by the investigation have since been re-opened.

No identities have been released.
