CHICO, Calif. - The Veteran's Garden Project handed out hundreds of vegetable plants to retired and active servicemen and women on Saturday at the Humboldt Community Garden.
The 2nd Annual Plant Giveaway kicked off Memorial Day weekend in Butte County, with hundreds of squash, zucchini, tomato and other plants given away for free.
The event also gave the past and current military members an opportunity to meet each other and learn about plots available to veterans at the community garden.
"We have 22 raised beds out here at the Humboldt Community Garden, so they're able to come out here if they don't have a place to garden at their own home and they can garden here with other vets and socialize with other vets," said Rosemary Febbo, project director of the Veterans' Garden Project. "A very serene and safe place for them to be."
