Another Homeless Man Beaten in Shasta County
A homeless man is unconscious in the hospital after authorities say he was attacked in Mountain Gate. Shasta County Sheriff's deputies found 35-year old Edward Jennings severely beaten on Wonderland Boulevard just south of Bass Drive Wednesday night. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center with severe injuries to his face and head. Right now, the only person with answers in this case is the victim Edward Jennings. But because of his injuries, investigators have not gotten a chance to speak with him yet. Deputies found Jennings just off of Wonderland Boulevard around midnight. But so far, there is little to no leads in the case. They say since Jennings had no permanent home, putting the clues together could be much harder. Sheriff's investigators are asking anyone with information on the assault to contact them at 245-6025. Edward Jennings is the third homeless man attacked in the past four months in Shasta County. In April, 48-year old Timothy Alcorn was murdered off of Lake Boulevard in Redding. Less than a week later, 51-year old Jeffrey Smerber told police he was behind a building on South Market Street when three teenagers attacked him. The three teens accused of Alcorn's murder are currently awaiting their trial.
Tehama Marijuana Growers Prepare to Fight Ordinance
Tehama County's legal marijuana users are ready to fight a proposed ordinance, saying they will take the County to court if it is adopted later this month. Marijuana gardens in Tehama County are legal under State law. But a lot of them would violate an ordinance proposed by Supervisor Bob Williams that would limit grow sites to 25 plants. That is just part of the regulation up for discussion on July 14th. Medicinal marijuana users say they are collecting donations for legal fees, should it pass. The ordinance is on the agenda for the Tehama Supervisors' meeting on July 14th. Whichever side of the issue you are on, board members would like to hear what you have to say.

TANC Hits Roadblock
The Transmission Agency of Northern California's largest financial supporter has backed out. In a released statement, TANC said they're evaluating their next steps because the Sacramento Municipal Utility District withdrew itself from the project. Because of that, TANC has cancelled all of it's public outreach meetings during July. We spoke to Shasta County Supervisor Les Baugh, he told us he doesn't see how TANC can move forward now. Baugh has been largely outspoken against the project that plans to build 600 miles of power lines throughout the northstate. If approved, people in Tehama, Glenn and Butte counties could loose their homes because of eminent domain. We tried calling TANC for comment...they haven't returned our calls yet.

Shasta near the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial on Highway 97, the Memorial Fire was contained at one-quarter acre.
Gay Couple Face Alleged Hate Crime
A gay couple in Redding is dealing with what investigators are saying is a hate crime. Jason York and his husband who did not want to be identified woke up this weekend to find homophobic slurs scratched into their car. The word "homo" was etched into the roof, and other derogatory words were written all over the car. The couple says it is not first time they have been targeted because of their sexuality, and the latest crime just shows just how little the area has changed since the Matson and Mowder murders 10 years ago. The couple's car was parked at the front entrance of their Redding mobile home park when it happened. The Redding Police Department is investigating and say they do not have any suspects right now.
Rolling Brownouts in Butte Fire Stations
A measure to save money by reducing fire staffing in Butte County went into effect Wednesday. Up to two engines per day will be unstaffed in different parts of the County. Staffing reductions will be rotated around the county, so no parts of the county are affected more than others. Decisions on which engines will be browned out will be made on a day-to-day basis. State funding will be available to fully fund the department if a major emergency occurs.

Grand Jury Report Calls for Changes to BCDBH
Butte County's Department of Behavioral Health needs new leadership. That is what the Grand Jury report says. The Grand Jury recommends that the department recruit a permanent director, which is a position that has not been filled for the last two years. Grand Jurors also want the department's finances to be more closely monitored, because they say contract costs have gone up more than 200% in the past two years. We called the Butte County Supervisors Thursday afternoon. They say they cannot comment on the Grand Jury report until the department issues a formal response. That is not expected until sometime around SSeptember.

Deputy Hospitalized after Collapse
A Butte County Sheriff's deputy remains in a coma more than a week after collapsing following a workout. Detective Eric Christopher is in the Intensive Care Unit at Enloe Medical Center. According to his wife's blog, he is now breathing on his own and doctors are continuing to run tests to learn more about his condition. Sheriff Perry Reniff says Christopher is one of the most committed people in the department. He said he is an “extremely dedicated individual. One of the hardest working individuals that this department's ever had, as evidenced by him being this year's Peace Officer of the Year.” The Deputy Sheriff's Association has set up the Eric Christopher Benevolent Fund at Chase Bank to assist the family with ongoing expenses. List of Firework-Friendly Cities, Counties
They sparkle, fizzle, and pop, but in some places in the Northstate, they bring citations.
With Fourth of July around the corner, we wanted to lay out what cities and counties allow fireworks, and which do not. Counties that allow fireworks include Tehama and Glenn Counties. The cities of Oroville and Gridley are also on the list. Fire officials want to remind you that if a child starts a fire with fireworks, the parents could have to pay for the firefighting costs. Shasta, Trinity, and everywhere else in Butte County have outlawed fireworks altogether.
