Crash knocks down power lines, causes fire

CAL FIRE responded to a fire on Highway 99 after a driver left the roadway and ran into a power pole.

An unidentified 21-year-old female driving a 2005 Toyota Camry is believed to have been trying to pass a car when she left the road and sheered a power pole. That led to a fire and the closure of both directions of traffic on Highway 99.

Officer Thompson with the California Highway Patrol told KRCR reporters that the driver was the sole occupant of the car and left the crash uninjured.

The highway is closed at Nelson Road, a few miles south of Durham-Pentz Road.

According to CHP, Highway 99 is still closed in both directions. They plan to have southbound lanes opened around 3:30 p.m. but warn drivers of delays due to traffic build up. At this time Northbound is going to be closed for two to three hours and the CHP has created a detour starting at the Highway 162 exit, where drivers will take that to Highway 70 which leads right back into Highway 99.
