A major Internet outage is affecting many Northern California Charter customers.

The outage was reported around 7 p.m. on Tues. night. 22,000 phone customers, 46,000 internet customers and 75,000 video customers are affected by the outage.

A fiber optic cable severed just north of Oakland caused the outage to Charter Communications customers, cutting off Internet access. Crews are working to repair the cable but no exact time of restoration has been announced.

It is estimated that Internet service could be down for six to eight hours.

City of Redding released a statement about the outage affecting bill payments and email services. All City departments and personnel are accessible over the phone, but the outage will prevent utility payments by credit card over the phone.
