Chico Residents Can File For Refund of Chico Cell Phone Tax
If you live in Chico and own a cell phone, the city may owe you a refund.
Voters rejected Measure J in the November election. The measure would have amended the city's telephone users tax to include cell phones and other modern technology.
Frank Fields, the accounting manager in the city's finance department, said the city will lose about a million dollars and they will need to make up the loss.
At 5% of a cell phone user's bill, if you spend $150 per month on your cell phone, you could get a refund of $7.50 per month. That adds up to about $90 for a 12-month period.
The city's general fund will see a loss of $900,000 to $1 Million, relative to the city's annual budget. That's about 2.5% of the city's $40 million budget.
Refunds start February 21, but will only be given for taxes paid over the last 12 months. Since the city is no longer taxing cell pones, the sooner you apply, the bigger the refund you'll get.
Residents in the City of Chico can file a form to receive a refund of taxes paid on cell phones and VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) service during the last year.
Refund requests should be submitted or mailed to the City of Chico Finance Office at 411 Main Street.
