Chico School Plans Move, Lets Two Teachers Go
A Chico Christian school has let two teachers go and is planning to pack up its bags and move to a new location.
Students and parents got the news today that Champion Christian will be moving, and there was mixed reaction.
George Harter is a senior at Champion Christian School in Chico but soon that will all change. The school plans to move to Paradise at the end of January meaning Harter will travel an extra 20 minutes to get to school.
“It's going to be difficult. I think we might do carpool and I think we can make it work,” said Harter.
Champion Christian says they will be moving from the East Avenue Community Church of the Nazarene to the Calvary Baptist Church on Clark Road in Paradise.
“We've been here for 20 and half years and they have been wonderful for us but we have a smaller student body and we don't need this big of a campus,” said Board President Robert Reynolds.
Last year, the school had 72 students, but that number dropped to 27 after the graduating class last year and rumors of the school closing down began.
Some people we spoke with opposed the move, but some students and parents like the idea.
“It takes me 40 minutes to get here and that will cut my time in half,” said Kim Hawes, a parent.
“It's actually kind of nice,” said 8th grade student Garrett Marking. “This way I only live 5 minutes away riding my bike but it's going to be a change."
Champion Christian also let two teachers go. Claire Hanson and Michael Griffin were laid-off yesterday because the school simply couldn't afford them - leaving six teachers left.
“It's sad to see them go; I learned a lot from them,” said Harter.
“We are just going to have to go with the future and hope everything will be alright,” said Marking.
The administration said they have been getting calls from parents in the Paradise area to enroll their kids and so far no one they know of has dropped out.
