Hospitalized 21-Year-Old in Chico Pulled Off Life Support
Chico State student Mason Sumnicht was pulled off life support late last night after an alcohol overdose on his 21st birthday, according to two of Sumnicht's friends.
The friends, Breana Horvatc and Talia Callari, were in Chico State's Ski and Snow Club, which Sumnicht started. They described Sumnicht as "the funniest guy ever" and as someone who would "always make you smile."
Sumnicht is still alive after being taken off of life support but Horvatc and Callari said he was still in a coma and that he is facing serious brain damage.
Menloe Medical Center, where Sumnicht is being treated, has not released his official condition.
Sumnicht was in the Panhellenic fraternity of Sigma Pi and was with his fraternity brothers when he overdosed.
A candlelight service was held for Sumnicht in Chico on Sun. night but some, including Callari and Horvatc, were upset because the service was treated similarly to a funeral even though Sumnicht is still alive.
There have been at least two deaths from alcohol poisoning this year in Chico including the deaths of 22-year-old Chico State student Carly Callaghan and Butte College student Shaun Summa.
