Inmate Found Dead Inside Jail
A jail inmate was found dead Monday inside the Tehama County Jail.
Robert Rupe, 27 of Red Bluff, was found Monday at 6:12 p.m.. Correction officers found him hanging from a sheet. Deputies said turned his bunk up on end, using a bed sheet. He tied it to the top end of the bunk hanging himself.
Officers began CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rupe had been arrested Sunday night around 7 p.m. after police say he stole a safe from his father's home on Britt Lane. The safe contained medications and a gun.
Police say Rupe threatened his father during a phone call from the jail. Rupe later told officers where they could find the safe so his father could get his medication.
Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnson issued a news release Wednesday morning. It states when he was arrested, Rupe denied having suicidal thoughts and was cleared for incarceration. Deputies said he had not shown any type of distress during his last contact with correctional officers at 5:23 p.m. Monday.
Rupe had been served with an emergency protective order on the day of his arrest. The order provided protection for members of Rupe's family who were reportedly his victims.
Deputies and investigators from the Tehama County District Attorney conducted a joint investigation. It was learned Rupe had previously attempted suicide in 2010.
An autopsy is scheduled later this week.
