YREKA, Calif. -

Siskiyou County  Interstate 5 is open after 60-car pileup that shut down the freeway north of Yreka for more than 10 hours, according to California Highway Patrol.

The series of crashes began just before 6:30 on Tuesday night just south of the Highway 96 junction and they stretched for nearly a mile on Interstate 5.

One lane of the southbound side of I-5 was closed for emergency vehicles but has been re-opened.

Northbound lanes are now open to escorted traffic.

Officers say 8 people were taken to area hospitals, 2 of them with serious injuries.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time but icy road conditions played a role in the crash.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the area.

The American Red Cross temporarily opened an evacuation center at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds in Yreka for the stranded motorists but that shelter has been shut down. Nobody was at the shelter when it closed.
