CHICO, Calif. -

Private First Class Casey J. Holmes, from Chico, died Monday night after being injured during a training exercise before deployment.

The incident took place at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., where Holmes' unit was temporarily training. The accident is currently being investigated.

Holmes, 20, enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 2012 and joined the third Battalion, third Marine Regiment at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in October 2012.

During his time in the service, he had received the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Holmes had also graduated from Chico High School. Jesse Holmes, Casey's youngest brother (he was one of five children) said that Casey was a fun guy whose "glowing personality" made anyone happy.

Family told us that Holmes went to Butte College right after high school, where he was in the ROTC program. He left after one semester and was transferred to the Marine Corps base in Hawaii.
