CHICO, Calif. -

The Chico City Council swore in its new mayor last night after former mayor Anne Schuab got a seat on the City Council.

The council swore in Mary Goloff, a freshman math teacher at Chico High School. Goloff has lived in Chico for the past 38 years after moving to the city during her freshman year in college.

On Wednesday morning, Goloff had to explain to her students how she would be mayor while continuing to teach.

Goloff also said she is truly honored to be the newest mayor.

"It's a nice feeling," Goloff said. "Humbling is word I would use [...] but we are community of close to 100,000 people and I don't that responsibility lightly.  I'm looking forward to be representing our community here in the North State and I'm really excited about it."
