Mount Shasta kicked off our nation's birthday with their annual walk and run.

Some call it a small town tradition, but this little city at the bottom of Mount Shasta welcomed over 5,000 runners and walkers. That's more than the city's entire population.

The event started in 1980 with only 250 people.

They have three races. The more competitive runners run five miles. Walkers in the two mile fun walk follow right behind and for the young ones, there's a two mile race.

It's not just about the race. There's food, music, entertainment and even the Mount Shasta Street Circus.

The fun continues through the afternoon with a parade and wraps up at 9:45 Wednesday night with fireworks over Lake Siskiyou.
