New Details: Wrong-Way Driver Causes 4-Car Accident on Interstate 5
A Redding man was arrested Wednesday morning for driving into oncoming traffic on Interstate 5, causing a 4-car accident.
It happened just after 7 p.m. Tuesday between Riverside Avenue and Knighton Road in Shasta County.
California Highway Patrol Officers said Gordon George Stradford, 69, was under the influence of drugs when he drove his Mercury Villager minivan south in the northbound lanes.
Officers said Ryan Mitchell Patterson, driving a Toyota Camry, Jon Leslie Kolb, driving a Dodge Avenger, and Chrystine Rose Potter, driving a Kia Optima were all victims of the crash.
Chrystine Potter said the car in front of her swerved and that's when she saw the van. She tried to swerve out of the way too, but she still hit the car.
Potter said Stradford was already out of the van, acting confused and out of it. "He had to be on something so strong not to realize he was going down the wrong road and people were swerving out of the way. I mean, I can't even comprehend what he would be on to make him do that," she said.
At least one person was taken to the hospital for moderate injuries.
Stradford was arrested and booked into the Shasta County jail for DUI resulting in injury.
He is being held on $50,000 bail.
