Officer Stops Bank Robbery in Progress
OROVILLE, Calif. -

It appears a bank robbery suspect in Oroville had extremely bad timing.

Police said he tried to rob the Sierra Central Credit Union, while an off-duty police officer was just a few feet way.

It happened around 10:30 Monday morning at the credit union located at 1036 Oro Dam Boulevard East.

Police said the suspect Alexander Sears, 48, walked in with a hoodie over his head and was wearing sunglasses and a stocking hat.

Investigators said after refusing to remove his hoody and sunglasses, he put a bag on a teller's counter and demanded money.

Off-duty Oroville Police Officer David Bryning was in the bank on personal business, and tackled Sears to the ground with the help of another customer.

Police arrived and arrested Sears.  Officers found a pocket knife in Sears' pocket.  He was booked into the Butte County Jail.
