Stolen Car Chase Reaches Speeds of up to 115 MPH

CHICO, Calif. -

An overnight vehicle theft ends in a high speed chase through Butte County and two suspects in jail.     

It started just after midnight.  Chico Police said black Honda was stolen from a home on East Lassen Avenue in Chico.    Officers stopped a second Honda that was following the first vehicle, and found a teenager with burglary tools.   

Officers pursued the stolen vehicle to Oroville, where it turned off its headlights.  The car reached speeds of up to 115 mph on Oro Dam Boulevard.   

The driver abandoned the vehicle.  Monday morning around 5:15 a.m.,  officers located the driver Christopher Smith, 22, near his home in Oroville.  Smith faces a series of charges including vehicle theft, evading a peace officer and reckless driving.  Smith is on Post Release Community Supervision.
