Three-Strikes Case; Cottonwood Man Pleads Not Guilty in Officer Involved Shooting
The Cottonwood man who led officers on a high-speed chase on Happy Valley Road in December plead not guilty Thursday morning to twelve felony counts.
48-year-old William "Billy" Kinyon was driving in a red pick-up truck on Dec. 4 with two passengers in the car when California Highway Patrol officers attempted to pull him over.
One of the passengers was 24-year-old Michelle Short, who was 6-months pregnant at the time. Kinyon is the father of one of Short's children. The other passenger was 29-year-old Wendy Michaels. She was not injured during the incident but was questioned by investigators and later released.
When CHP Officers and Shasta County Deputies tried to pull over Kinyon, he fled. During the pursuit Kinyon allegedly brandished a gun. Deputies said there were multiple exchanges of gunfire before Kinyon eventually stopped, got out his pick-up truck and threatened officers with a firearm. That's when officers shot Kinyon.
He was treated at Mercy Medical Center for non life-threatening injuries. Short was injured but recovered at home. Family members said the baby was unharmed.
Thursday morning Kinyon plead not guilty to twelve felony counts; two attempted murder counts, two counts assault with a firearm on a police officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, illegal possession of ammunition, exhibiting a firearm, evading officers, discharge of a firearm in a vehicle, carrying a loaded firearm, sale of a controlled substance and a felon in possession of a controlled substance.
The Shasta County District Attorney's office said Kinyon's case is a three-strikes case because he is a previous convicted felon. Deputies said Kinyon was sentenced to state prison in 2005 for drug related charges. He was released in 2011 under AB109 and was put on probation.
Early 2012 Kinyon was charged with drug related charges. He failed to show up to court and a warrant for his arrest was issued in November.
Kinyon will be back in court for his preliminary hearing on Feb. 5.
