Update: CHP Shoots Two Suspects Near West Valley High School in Cottonwood
West Valley High School was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after shots were fired in a pursuit involving the CHP and three suspects.
CHP dispatch said it started at 9:52 a.m. when a CHP officer tried to pull over a vehicle for a headlight that was out. The officer tried to make the traffic stop at Front and Main Streets in Cottonwood.
CHP said the vehicle sped away, leading the officer on a pursuit. At some point one suspect reportedly pointed a gun out the window of the car.
The pursuit came to a stop near West Valley High School at Gas Point Road and Happy Valley Road.
Officers fired shots at the suspects striking two of them. As of 10:20 a.m., all three suspects were in custody.
KRCR News Channel 7 reporter Chelsea Kay said two of the suspects, one man and one woman, were taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center. They were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers were seen talking with one woman who was reportedly in the car, but was not taken away by ambulance.
One man at the scene told KRCR News Channel 7 that he knows one of the people in the suspect vehicle who was shot. He said she is a pregnant woman in her mid-20's. She told her family at least 7 shots were fired.
The CHP has yet to confirm the ages or names of the people in the car.
The school was placed on lockdown for more than half an hour, but as of 10:45 a.m., the lockdown had been lifted.
The Shasta County Sheriff's Office said access to West Valley from Gas Point Road is currently closed. The only access to the school is from Happy Valley Road.
