The Redding Police Department in conjunction with the Shasta County Sheriff's Office have released the names of the two Shasta County Sheriff's Deputies involved in the shooting of Bounkeuth Sengphachanhm, 58, on Saturday March 16.

The deputy who used a Taser and shot Sengphachanh is Deputy Jason Thatcher.  Deputy Thatcher has been with the Shasta County Sheriff's Office for since August of 2012. He was previously a deputy with the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office for approximately three years.

The second deputy present was Deputy Steven Curtiss. Deputy Curtiss began his career with the Shasta County Sheriff's Office in 1999 as a Reserve Deputy.  He was hired as a full time deputy in 2000 and worked in the jail until he transferred to the Patrol Division in 2004. He worked in Major Crimes from 2007 to 2011 and then transferred back to the Patrol Division where he is currently assigned.

Deputies received a call just before 7 p.m. Saturday night, in the 8,000 block of Christopher Lane in Redding, on the city's southeast side.  The caller said a suspect with mental health issues was causing a disturbance.

Deputies said Bounkeuth Sengphachanh was uncooperative and armed with a knife.  Deputy Jason Thatcher used a Taser on that man but it didn't work.   Deputies said  Sengphachanh charged towards the deputy, attempting to stab him.  The deputy fired and the man went down.

He was taken to Mercy Medical Center for two non-life threatening gunshot wounds.  Redding Police are leading the investigation, which is standard protocol when the sheriff's office is involved in a shooting.
