A Redding California Highway Patrol Officer has pleaded not guilty to charges regarding child pornography.
45-year-old Gerald "Gary" Harris pleaded not guilty in a Shasta County courtroom Monday morning to two felony counts of possession of child porn, a felony count for unauthorized use of a computer, a misdemeanor count for annoying a child and two special allegations.
Deputy District Attorney Rachel Donahou told KRCR News Channel Seven that Harris obtained child porn photos by using a CHP owned hard drive that had pictures from a prior investigation.
Harris is also accused of possessing an inappropriate photo of a child that was in his wife's second grade class at Meadow Lane Elementary School in Anderson.
Harris' attorney, Joe Gazzigli told us earlier this month that Harris is also accused of possessing
photos of minors engaging in sexual activity, where one of the minors is believed to be a 12 year old boy.
Donahou would not confirm or deny those allegations.
The child porn charges were filed Thursday. A Shasta County Jail official tells us Harris turned himself in Friday. He posted $75,000 bail and was released the same day.
The prosecution requested Harris not have any contact with anyone younger than 18 years old.
Harris' defense attorney, Joe Gazzigli, argued that the "people took a long time to get these charges together " and if Harris was "such a hazard why would they take so long" to file.
The judge granted the prosecution's request, with the exception of contact with minors that are family members.
Harris also pleaded not guilty to thirteen felony counts, including possession of assault weapons, possession of a controlled substance, possession of explosives and a misdemeanor for embezzlement.
Harris was served with a search warrant on his Deschutes Road home in Anderson on February 21st.
He turned himself in on March 2nd and then posted $100,000 bail.
Harris is scheduled to be back in court September 4th for a preliminary hearing.
