Update: Suspected DUI Crash Kills Hayfork Man, Driver Arrested
The California Highway Patrol responded to a fatal accident early Thursday morning in Trinity County. The driver Zachary Carter, 29 of Hayfork, was arrested for felony DUI.
The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Morgan Hill Road near Genest in Hayfork. The CHP said a 2001 Chevy Silverado was eastbound on Morgan Hill Road traveling between 65-70 miles per hour when it ran off the road and hit a tree.
A 28-year-old Hayfork man who was a passenger was pinned in the back seat behind the driver. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.
Two other passengers received minor injuries, including Sarah August, 21, and Matalde Atwell, 22, both of Hayfork.
According to the CHP news release, Carter suffered major injuries in the crash after he was pinned behind the wheel.
