A wild chase in Oroville ended with a suspect in custody. It started with a home invasion robbery in Forbestown, leading to a police pursuit, crash, house fire and foot chase.
Christopher South, 24, now faces a series of charges. Deputies said he was on parole for burglary.
The Butte County Sheriff's Office said it started at 4:20 p.m. Thursday.
A resident of Forbestown called the Butte County Sheriff’s Office to report that two men had forced their way into his home, sprayed him with pepper spray and left in his truck along with items from his home.
Deputy Grant Landis saw a vehicle that matched the description of the truck taken in Forbestown travelling west on Olive Highway at a high rate of speed, approaching Foothill Boulevard at about 4:35 p.m.
The deputy followed the truck which accelerated to speeds of up to 70 mph. The truck lost control and crashed into a power pole in front of a home on Oro Quincy Highway. The pole was sheared off, causing strain on the wires to a vacant home and sparking a fire on an outside wall.
The driver jumped out and ran from the crash. Deputy Landis ran after the suspect and took him into custody. Landis said South was trying to break into a home on Canyon Highlands Drive.
Deputies said inside the truck they found pepper spray used in the home invasion and property taken from the victim's home.
