ALTURAS, Calif. -

Things are back to normal Tuesday morning in Alturas after a bear brought things to a halt for much of Monday afternoon.

The nearby high school was placed under lockdown after a homeowner found a 300 pound bear in a vacant garage.   He found the animal around 12:30 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of East 8th Street in Alturas.

In photos snapped by Police Chief Ken Barnes, you could see the bear peering out of the open door of the garage.  Fish and Wildlife hit the bear with two tranquilizer darts but the tranquilizers failed to have an effect.

Around 3:30 p.m. officers said they had no choice but to shoot and kill the bear.
