Redding Police responded to the scene where a man's body was found near the train tracks at Yuba and Oregon Streets.
The body was reported around 10 a.m. Monday along Yuba Street near the Veterans Hall.
The victim was not immediately identified, but police estimated him to be 25 or 26 years old.
A witness told police the victim was walking northbound and the train was going southbound when he was hit by a train.
According to police, the train conductor made numerous attempts to warn him of the oncoming train by using the train's horn but the pedestrian did not leave the tracks.
Police said he was walking on the rail with his head down when the train struck him. Sgt. Mike Wood said he may have been wearing headphones.
First responders attempted life-saving efforts, however, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
