CHICO, Calif. - UPDATE: 3:30 a.m.: At an early morning press conference, Chico Police Chief Michael O'Brien and Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey released details about a fatal, officer involved shooting earlier in the evening.
The incident occurred at a home in the 700 block of W. 4th Avenue in Chico, as two police officers fired at a subject after a lengthy physical confrontation. The man, whose name has not yet been released, later died on the way to Enloe Medical Center.
According to O'Brien, dispatch received a call around 7:30 p.m. from the subject's father. The subject was "hostile to first responders", and Chico Police officers were then dispatched to the scene.
During their attempt to diffuse the situation, officers believed the subject's father was in jeopardy. There were also children in the home. Police forced entry into the home, attempted to subdue the subject with a taser, but the subject used a knife to slash at officers from close proximity. According to O'Brien, police deployed their handguns, striking the subject with an undetermined number of rounds.
Emergency personnel had remained staged in the area, and after applying life-saving techniques, the man was taken to the hospital where he later died.
District Attorney Mike Ramsey said his office will be handling the investigation into the case and circumstances leading up to the shooting. Officers involved, whose names have not yet been released, will be on administrative leave, pending the investigation.
