Chico State student assaulted near campus

Suspect is still on loose

CHICO, Calif. -  A Chico State student was nearly abducted Wednesday night not far from campus.
It happened at West Third Street and Ash Street just before midnight.

A 20-year-old woman said she was walking home from school when she felt something touching her from behind. When she turned around she said a young Hispanic man grabbed her and picked her up off the ground.  She told police she screamed and struggled to get away, which she did unharmed. The suspect  headed south on Ash.

Students in the neighborhood  said it's dark and dangerous in that area.

"I typically, when it's late at night, have my pepper spray with me," said Becca Galerne, a sophomore at Chico State. "It sucks that there are people here trying to harm other people [because] it's a friendly town with friendly people."

The suspect is an Hispanic male between the ages of 19 and 22. He's 6-foot and 160 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes.  At the time, he was wearing a white shirt with dark colored shorts.
