CHICO, Calif. - Downtown Chico businesses estimate they'll see at minimum a 25 percent increase in sales because of the family and friends who will come to town for commencement ceremonies for the nearly 4,000 graduates who will receive their degrees from Chico State through Sunday.
"We definitely have to bring in some extra staff, and we're going to be full all weekend," said Nick Land, the general manager of Burgers & Brew.
But it's more than a weekend financial flurry.
The Downtown Chico Business Association reports a five percent uptick in tax revenue from the same period a year ago. In addition, Chico's population has increased more than a percent over the last year.
Glenn Baumgartner, who owns What a Pane Window Cleaning has noticed a significant difference in downtown during the 20 years he's lived in Chico.
"I've seen a few more people downtown since I've been here," said Baumgartner, who said his clientele base has also grown.
