CHICO, Calif. - Chico police have arrested a man they said accidentally shot a 4-year-old.
It happened Sunday afternoon at a home on La Bella Court. officers said the child's father told them the 4-year-old had been playing in the backyard when he heard a loud "pop" and the child began to cry. When the father heard this he went to the backyard and found the child with a gunshot wound to the upper thigh and immediately took the child to the hospital.
After speaking to the father, Chico police said they searched the neighborhood for witnesses and evidence. While talking to witnesses east of the child's home, police say they met 22-year-old Ronald Cameron. They said Cameron told them he was cleaning a .22 caliber rifle when his finger brushed against the trigger and discharged a round into the back fence.
Police said Cameron was unaware that the rifle round struck the 4-year-old child that was playing in the adjacent yard.
Cameron was arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm.
The 4-year-old suffered non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital.
