PARADISE, Calif. - A 75-year-old Paradise man, who suffered from dementia, was found Friday afternoon after he went missing for 24 hours. A search helicopter spotted James Nixon about one thousand yards outside of the Paradise airport. He was with his 7-year-old dog, Summer.
Crews hiked to the area to check his condition before lifting him up to the hovering helicopter. Nixon was taken to a nearby hospital by Butte County Search and Rescue, which reported that Nixon didn't appear to be suffering anything more than slight dehydration.
Nixon, a former officer for the California Highway Patrol, is cared for by his daughter and son-in-law, who left him home for a brief time to run errands. They said this was the first and only time Nixon had wandered so far away from their home.
