Overheight big rig hits Oroville overpass

OROVILLE, Calif. - A big rig hauling an industrial logging jack on a flatbed crashed into the bottom of an overpass Monday afternoon.

The CHP says a Peterbilt truck being driven by David Johnson, 40, of Colfax, was four inches too tall for the bridge, which had a clearance of 15 feet.

It clipped the underside, breaking off a chunk of concrete, sending it onto Highway 70 below.

Johnson told officers he was coming from Cottonwood and had cleared other bridges en route.

A lane of Highway 70 was closed for hours while the CHP and Caltrans assessed and cleaned up the damage.

Officials told KRCR News Channel 7 they believe the overpass to be structurally sound.
